Real estate: second homes in France will be soon surcharged

Many French cities have decided to raise the taxes on second homes to dissuade homeowners from renting them on Airbnb.

In the upcoming months, this housing surtax could double or even triple.

For example, Alain Juppé, mayor of the city of Bordeaux, would like to jump this surtax to increase the rate of 20% to 50%, according to the economic daily.

Recall that the 2017 Finance Act allows municipalities to overtax second homes up to 60%.

The initiative was launched by the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo to dissuade homeowners from renting their homes on platforms such as Airbnb.

Several municipalities located in tense areas believe that they need housing for active and families. Many homeowners are investing for Airbnb rentals. In reality, they never occupy their homes themselves.

By practicing such an increase, the municipalities hope that the owners will sell their second homes or rent through the year, while pocketing, in passing, millions of euros …
